Uruguay Customs Information – HHGlogistics
REQUIRED DOCUMENTS
- Itemized inventory written in Spanish, must be legalized by Uruguayan Consulate at origin
- Foreigners require a resident visa, stamped passport, or a certificate of permanent residence
- If above are not provided and you are not a permanent resident of Uruguay, you will need to deposit a bank guarantee letter, the value of shipment (in cash), or provide a guarantee from employer.
- Once you have obtained permanent residence or shipment leaves country, the guarantee will be returned
- Certificate of residence stating you have lived abroad for at least 2 years is required for returning Uruguayan citizens; can be obtained by consulate at origin.
- Bank guarantee letter
CUSTOMS REGULATIONS
- All shipments must arrive within 90 days of owner
- May import household goods and personal effects duty-free if provide evidence of use and if owner has lived abroad and owned goods for a minimum of 2 years; customer must also have a permanent residence status.
- Non-permanent residents may need to make a bank guarantee deposit
RESTRICTED ITEMS/DUTIABLE
- New items subject to value added tax and duties
- May only import one of each electrical appliance, except for TV sets
- Bicycles allowed as part of household goods shipment only
- Antiques and works of art
- Tobacco products
- Alcohol
- Food
- Coins and jewelry
- Requires a marriage certificate and packing list to import wedding gifts
- To import inherited goods need a packing list, proof of estate of inheritance, and death certificate
PROHIBITED ITEMS
- Ammunition and weapons require a permit from Ministry of Defense
- Only sport guns allowed
- New electrical appliances
- Plants require a health certificate
- Drugs
- Subversive or pornographic materials
MOTOR VEHICLES
- New vehicles are dutiable
- Returning Uruguayan citizens may import used vehicles if they meet the following requirements:
- Owner has lived abroad for at least 3 years
- Vehicle must have been in owner’s name for at least 3 years
- Must apply for authorization from the Ministry of Finance before customs clearance
- Foreigners may not import used vehicles
- Required documents:
- Original commercial invoice
- Certificate of registration or matriculation, or car title
- The above documents must be legalized by Uruguayan Consulate at origin. Must also officially translate documents into Spanish
PETS
- Vaccination and health certificate required
